Hoeksteen van de Samenleving

Cornerstone of Society

Documentary | 62 min | The Netherlands | 2026

Seventy years ago, the legal incapacity of married women was abolished in the Netherlands, allowing married women, for the first time, to work, travel and make financial  decisions independently, without their husband’s consent.

On paper, gender equality seems to have been achieved: women pursue higher education in large numbers, are often more highly educated than men, and are more financially  independent than ever. Yet the division of paid work, care  and income often shifts dramatically once children enter  the picture. Only 9% of heterosexual couples manage to  divide family responsibilities equally.

Why do traditional gender roles remain so persistent?  And what role does politics play in sustaining — or challenging — them?
